I removed my door jamb vents last night to have a look inside the quarter panel cavity and found mostly good metal but towards the bottom where it meets the inner and outer sills surface rust has formed. Can anything be done to stop this before it gets worse and starts eating the metal all the way through to the outside?

spray waxoil or similar in there

I'll give it a go. Might try to remove some of the rust with some sand paper and a long stick first!

as this is the most common rot area for 2nd gens, id rather not forget it! otherwise it will be £££££ to cut off the nicely painted and solid rear quarter panel to access the inside parts to weld in new metal, fitthe quarter panel again and get it painted...again.

I can highly recommend any 2nd gen owners taking a look inside this cavity as it gives you a good insight into the condition of the body work internally. Plus, it there is surface rust like mine you can treat it before it gets bad.

Mine was rotten in there, I cut the lower quarter off and remade it all. Bitch of a job as lots of bits of metal all meet up down there. Is funny, when they rust in that area it never looks too bad - until you get into it and see how bad it is. It's always much much worse than the outside would lead you to believe!

That's why I was worried! I suddenly thought the other evening - best have a look in there as I do have a paint bubble on the outside on the passenger side. Luckily it looks like the bubble is just surface rust below the paint on the outside as the inside metal on that side is still in grey factory primer and I couldn't push my metal rod through it with a lot of force! Going to book it in to be repaired before it does get bad.



Out of interest, did you get away with spraying just the lower part of the quarter panel up to the swage line after you did your repair?

you should be fine to just paint upto the swage line if your car is white as white is pretty easy to match and hides most imperfections bar rust stains

On mine I had the whole quarter painted as I didn't stop at that first repair. It crept up around the wheel arch, then the quarter panel behind the wheel arch. My paint guy did the whole quarter and faded it all in somewhere up on the b pillar on the radius with the roof.

Cool so it can be done without an entire respray to make it look good.

never easy with a white car to fade in though, on my 78 the paint had faded more on top half and had to fade across door and boot

oh dear! well hopefully because mine hasnt seen much sun (never really went out until last year!!) it wont be too bad

out of all the colours white is the best to match in my opinion black is the worst i feel that is just what i have found my self red is near imposible once its a few years old with white you can be a shade or so out and not really notice it, most colour matches show up terrible in the sun where white does not
