2nd Gen 78 T/A Centre Console

Post by Roscoe » Fri Apr 24, 2015 7:29 pm

Just seen a video on YouTube of a 68 Camaro that had no centre console and looked great!

Has anyone completed a restoration on a 78 T/A without a centre console? Would it even be possible?

Any thoughts appreciated….

Thanks

It is possible yes it doesn't do anything other than cover the shifter and a few wires. Standard auto shifters look ugly exposed so a nice aftermarket one or a custom cover would be in order unless you have a manual in which case a neat boot would be in order. The carpet has gaps in it for the shifter so a custom carpet would be needed too.

Thanks buddy. Found a video on YouTube that shows a 77 with no console. Looks minimal and a lot cleaner. This will be something I'm looking to do with mine (TH400 Auto)

The wiring which goes up the console is for the shifter position indicator lamp and on some models the seat belt warning harness. Both easily tucked below a carpet.

So my next question is regarding windows. The console (I won't be using) has the cut out for electric window buttons. Can I covert current doors to manual!?

Drives door has no internal components and passenger door has motor inside!

Thanks

Yes it can be converted to manual windows. When I got mine the window was propped up with a piece of wood as the regulator and motor was missing so I fitted a manual regulator and handle temporarily. It's a pig to get the regulator in and out though. It's been so long I couldn't exactly tell you how I did it now.
