Cheers John. Since last post I've been trawling the web and this seems to be a common problem. Plenty of reports of same symptoms which boil down to iffy gauge readings. I'm planning on a proper oil pressure test

yeah proper oil pressure test with a known good guage i think is what is required at least there is no guessing then
