separate transmission cooler ?

Just wondering if anyone has done this on their 3rd gen. The two metal pipes that come out of the gearbox and go straight to the radiator were bent when removing the engine and a bit buggered to be honest, so ive cut the pipes cleanly and rejoined them with fuel injector hose and clamps. however i think it looks naff and im not sure if it will stay that way. The pipes also sit just above the exhaust which cant be great for cooling anyway, id of thought routing them down the engine bay and then disappearing under the heater box would be better.

Theres some tidy looking universal coolers on ebay etc, im thinking of fitting one of them infront of the rad and running some black braided hoses right to the gearbox instead and just blocking off the ports on the standard radiator.

Yay or nay ?

sounds like a good idea (thought of doing the same to mine but never got round to it
ideally it would be best to go through rad first then through a cooler

I've done this on my 2nd gen. Works great and they are so cheap that if you have a tranny issue or rebuild etc you can swap it to make sure no metal filings are left inside.

Been thinking about one myself,not sure what size would be needed though or if size matters for them.Or i might just buy a ali radiator,can't afford both.Waiting to see if i did good on the trans rebuild first though.

Ah very cool. I dunno what to do for the best really.

Im thinking what i reeeeeally should do is get the metal pipes off altogether and have some stainless braided hoses made and run them round the engine bay and then to the radiator. I cant say my transmission ever got hot or anything like that, and ive just installed a brand new radiator too.

I put the pipes back on the gearbox before installing it to the engine and then dropping it back in the car though, they look like a real bugger to get off with the gearbox still on the car, or are they not too bad to do ?

They are not too bad to do if the nuts are in good condition,spanner only just turns mine,they seem a odd size on mine,13mm or 1/2 spanners are slightly too big but 12 is too small so nuts round off easily.It's probably hard to get the pipes in or out,i just put mine back on but had no front end on car so was easy,probably easiest to pull them off from under the car towards the rear,don't think they would come through the engine bay without bending them.

im not bothered about bending them now, id snap them off if it makes it easier, lol. Im thinking just get them back off and find somewhere that can do me two really long braided hoses and put the proper ends on, then i can route them around the engine bay away from the engine

Main thing is knowing what size jic fitting would screw into the nut on the box,although i suppose you could just cut the pipe about 2" long and push the hose over it with a jubilee clip and just use the jic fitting at the cooler.
