is the whole rad getting hot?
have you tried without thermostat?

Yeah all is good with the cooling system....just isn't cooling enough for my liking.

more investigating next week i think, gotta drive to Doncaster tonight so in hoping for no traffic

Well i made it to KnightCon and back no problem, it stayed pretty much bang on 180 degrees all the way there just cruising between 60-70, same again coming home until i got stuck in traffic in Newcastle, i switched the fans on as i was approaching the traffic but the temp kept going up and the fans sort of kept it hovering at about 220-230 as i nervously crawled through the traffic, then when i got through the traffic and started moving again the temp did come down a bit but only to about 200, and that was going at 60mph again for a while.

So its like when the car gets hot, it doesnt want to cool down much again, even with the fans still going ?

However when i switched the car off when i got home, only for 10 mins to open the house up and garage it starts cooling down on its own no problem.

My fan doesn't come on until 220
Thats normally in traffic....cruising hovers around 140

Never had a problem

i run the fan all the time on mine ground the relay brown cable i think.

Ive got the fans on a switch so I always turn them on before it gets hot.

They just don't seem to cool it down, but they pull a ton of air through the rad, if they are on with the bonnet up its blowing a load of air over the engine

Yeah that helps a bit too, I just don't really want to drive round with the heater on coz it gets hot as hell in the car.

Someone at the show said I should fit a set of shrouded Kenlo fans?

I went to a cruise last night and hit mega traffic on the dual carriageway but credit to the car, with the fans on just crawling along it held the temp at 200

The saga continues, i let it run in the garage tonight for quite a while, i switched the fans on when it had warmed up to normal temp, about 180, and the temp stayed fairly steady for a while, so i turned the fans off, it got a bit hotter, i turned the fans on at 200 but it gradually got hotter.

The stupid thing is im getting mixed reading from my temp gun, with the fans running i tested upper and lower hoses and they were between 176-180 degrees, the intake was about the same, the top and bottom of the radiator on both sides were between 180-200 degrees depending on where i pointed the laser.

But the coolant in the overlow tank got quite high, and the temp gauge in the car was reading 225 degrees. I shut the car off and could hear gurgling in the top hose and top of the intake which you can hear in the video, but usually if it would overheat the coolant in the overflow tank would be bubbling wouldnt it ? but it was still as anything, just higher than usual.

Im trying to find a cooling flow diagram for an 87, the other week when i took the rad cap off to top up the coolant i noticed coolant was coming into the top of the rad from the heater hose, so im just wanting to know if the flow of coolant is right or not

Nope, thats why im trying to find a coolant flow diagram. Ive been assured it is though, it was bought for an 83 Trans Am, then given to me or my 87, with it being a non serpentine it should spin the same way ive been told

I guess im going to have to drain the cooling system, flush it through with a hose pipe and try that. Im just thinking it cant possibly be that though with the engine being totally stripped and assembled, then its got a new rad and everything, i just cant imagine there being a blockage.
