Hello. I've had the engine out of my firebird for last year or so. Have been turning it over to make sure its okay but have now got the engine back in the car and I am wondering how to align the auto transmission...Is there an easy way of doing it and getting the two locators lined up?*Unfortunately I can not connect the tranny to the engine out of the car as do not have the equipment to drop the engine back in with tranny connected!
Thanks

a metal rod through 2 bolt holes and a bit of a wiggle
if engine is straight/ level and so is the box they should not be far out anyway

Thanks for the quick reply! Have now included some pictures below. The engine is level and I can get the box level also however what I am trying to find out is how to align the torque convertor shaft into the tranny as they currently do not line up. Should I have removed the torque convertor or am I getting myself into more trouble? I am a bit wary as I have read the oil pump in the box is easily damaged.

Many thanks!!!

I'm sure John will correct me and advise better, but I thought that the torque converter should be slid onto the transmission input shaft first and then the transmission should be offered up to the engine as a whole unit, torque converter included.

indeed Ian, never separate the torque convertor from the box

you will need to unbolt the convertor from the flex plate then fit the convertor to the box
slide it onto first shaft then turn it slowly till it engages 2nd shaft then till lugs engage (you will feel it go in further each time)
then fit engine to box (in car) then bolt convertor to flex plate after bellhousing bolts are tight

next time make sure you undo the bolts at flex plate

fingers crossed there is no damage to convertor, flex plate or seals/box

The first automatic car i took the engine out of was a mk1 Granada, didn't have a clue and left the convertor on the engine, when i put it back in the car would only go in reverse, lol.
