Spark plugs wont budge!

Post by Taffy » Wed Aug 27, 2014 4:54 pm

Got some new spark plugs to fit but bu66ered if I can get the old ones out, they are solid.

Have only tried the front ones on each bank and they are not moving and don't want to force them in case the worse happens.

Any suggestions?

Paul.

Your gonna have to force them if they are to come out.

Spray some penno fluid around them, and put more force than your comfortable with. It's cast iron not aluminium! Make sure your socket is firmly on the plug nut and is not so baggy that it's touching the porcelaine.Worst that can happen is you snap the porcelaine. That's fine providing the plug nut doesn't round off due to incorrect or I'll fitting socket.

Cheers Ian.

Didn't want to force them but I'll give them a soaking and try again.

When I first did mine I had to give them at least double what I considered safe and normal for a modern aluminium head engine but they came out eventually without damage. I always add a dabble of Vaseline to the threads now. Cheap and keeps them rust free

always pays to put copper grease on plug threads
any grease will burn away over time, but the copper acts as a lubricant and stops threads seizing

Just watch ya knuckles, fingers, arms and head!!!

If they come loose at full bodily force it can end badly!

Not nice taffy I had one shear off on a 1975 Trans Am , after feeling sick for a bit I brought a set of extractors pointed things with opposite to the thread spiral on them, put it in what was left of the plug it came out easy :thumb:

Might be easier if you can get a ring spanner on them,or get a plug socket like i have with a hex at the end so you can get a spanner on,i find it easier than using a ratchet.
