Quadrajet only fits one way - small barrels to the front of the engine, large secondary barrels to the back.

Usually there is a aluminium plate below the phenolic gasket which sits directly below the carb so: manifold flange-aluminium plate gasket - thick phenolic base gasket - carb

It will most likely need a proper setup. It will run, but every engine is slightly different and so for best performance on a particular engine a good setup is always good.
