speedo

Trying to reinstate speedo. New cable, and 19 tooth natural colour drive gear installed on 80mph gauge and Borg warner 4 speed. Needle jumps about and mileage not clicking up enough. I took cog out of gearbox attached drill to cable end and cable moved easy with gauge reading steady speed. Put cog back on and installed in gearbox it jumps about again. Worm gear on shaft feels good too. Any ideas?

try feeling worm gear while someone turns the prop (rear jacked clear of ground) check for run-out

Closer inspection feeling with little finger, it seems the metal part in the gearbox that the cable's drive gear shaft sits in has worn or broken slightly on one edge. This probably makes the cog stick and jump. Waiting for payday then looking at a speedhut gps version to fit dash. Unless anyone has a better idea?
