tilt column woes

Post by dexyman » Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:15 pm

tilt column on my third gen is a little bit worn

when locked in place i can pull the wheel down to the left about a quarter inch

i assume this will fail mot which is due soon

stripped the column , all bolts tight .

problem is the left tilt pin housing itself is worn pin is fine.

i bodged some jb weld in and bashed the pin in left for a couple of days

still the same

what are my options.

recon column or can i buy just the tilt housings and new pins

2nd hand column is the easiest/cheapest I would think

there is a 3rd gen being broken on here somewhere

Hi Caz 3rd gen has the same prob it's not worn it's the 4 bolts come loose in the tilt it's a common fault you can do it yourself if you like fiddley jobs I'm in the middle of sorting one out now :thumb:

Don't know if they ship to the UK but this place sells all the bits, new, used and re con http://www.steeringcolumnservices.com/g ... s-tilt.php

But Rocky at American Technique is probably best to try for a used column.

You can repair a worn pin but sometimes easier just to replace column. They all go like that eventually as the pins are hardened and the housing is alloy.
