clattering from the back end

Post by Newcastle knight » Wed Aug 01, 2012 9:25 am

This problem has been there a while, i thought it was the spare tyre rattling around as the noise only comes from the rear passenger side wheel well, but i took the spare out and it still done it, but then the car went off the road last year so i just forgot about it, until i took it out the other day. It does it if i go over some bumps in the road, or when i tested it on a country road coming home, i steered the car side to side quite enthusiastically and it was banging going from side to side.

ive looked into it and so far it seems to be either the panhard bar bushes, or the C clips in the diff. I jacked the back end up and i can pull the wheels in and out slightly which makes a bit of a bang, but ive been told thats normal ? it does the same thing on both sides, and the noise only comes from the passenger side so im not sure if this is whats causing the noise. heres a video of that

Im hoping to get under the car tonight and try and wiggle the panhard bar around to see if that moves at all, has anyone else had this noise on their car ?

they always have a bit of play like that, normal
if it knocks steering side to side then it points to panhard bush. have you checked the bolts are tight?
check the bar itself, they can crack and then break (D's one did)

gonna have a look at the bar tonight when i get up to the garage John thanks, how on earth do they crack ?

just looking at the bushes for it on ebay, they are like 12 quid for the poly ones but 31 quid postage ! absolutely ridiculous.

turned out to be the bolts on the panhard bar ! they felt fairly tight but once i got the socket on i could turn them a bit, so i got my wheel brace instead and really nipped them up, took it for a spin and all was quiet from KITTs arse, result !
