Quick ratio steering box for 67 GTO?

Post by Nutts » Fri Aug 16, 2013 3:26 pm

Hi,

The steering box on my GTO is non power steering, very heavy unless moving, and many painful turns lock to lock. Swinging it quickly into a turn needs muscle and thought i.e. can I turn the wheel quick enough to get round that tight turning at this speed. Is there a quick ratio solution available? And will it make the steering even heavier if the number of turns lock to lock is less, or are they geared to actually help make turning it easier?

Thanks
Paul

I did a quick search and it looks like they used the common Saginaw steering boxes available on probably all GM cars up until the 90's.
So from that, you can get any steering box from any GM car. But you will need the pump/reservoir/pulley and bracket, as well as the two pressure hoses, and maybe the steering intermediate shaft.
The only problem you might get, is with 1980 and later boxes, as the hose fitting are metric.
