GTA alloy refurb headache

Went into Wheel Specialist today http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/loc ... ham-hants/ after booking my car in to get them refurbed but seem to have hit a blocker.

Had a long chat with the owner and they're not certain if they can powder coat the inners and retain a polished outer lip.

Challenges stated were that if they need to acid dip to get all the existing paint off they would struggle to polish the outers without damaging the painted finish of the inner

Powder coating would be hard to do because they couldn't get a defined edge on the inner where it meets the polished lip.

If they took car in they would want the wheels for a week but they only want the rims so i'd have to jack the car up or try and borrow some wheels whilst they're off :d'oh:

Has anyone had a set done without this hasselhoff??????

Ideally i was looking for powder coated inners and bare polished lip, seems harder than i thought

I can understand the technical reasons why they can't do the job.
Have you tried Autowerk in Slough ? Paul (Taffy) had his Snowflakes done there and a very good job they did.

having a couple of sets done at the moment, will let you know how they come out
going for a gold centre a diamond cut rim as I want them lacquered (fed up of keeping them polished, and if they lacquer a polished rim they say it will chip/not adhere properly)

Cheers John, always a bit dubious about lacquer. Once it's chipped the rot sets in quickly

same process if lacquered or not, diamond cut or turned finish is similar I would think

Interested to see how they do it and how they turn out, just visited another refurb place today. Same answer, can't powder coat inners only!

You'd think with the size of Southampton someone local could do this!!

To be honest John i don't think he was keen to do it hence price, nice drive into the country though :D

although not on a Pontiac set of alloys i know of somebody who also has had the inners of his wheels powder coated but the outer rims polished.

They initally powder coated the whole wheel and then machined off the faces on the rim to bare metal and then polished it as was suggested a few posts above.

this was a Mitsubishi Evo

Cheers Steve, did a search and this looked the favourite in your area.
Thanks Ian, certain it must be possible, just a case of finding someone to do it seems the issue.
Couple of leads now though, all over 2.5 hours away
