Choke light stays on

I need your expert advice please! A while ago the choke light started staying on, did not go off when the engine warmed up, choke seemed to open, engine revs dropped as normal. Started it up today, ran rough as anything with black smoke coming from the exhaust. Managed to drive it but when i turned the engine off it did not want to start again. After about 40 mins of trying it eventually started but ran really rough. Any ideas on what this could be? Many thanks!! :)

sounds like the choke has jammed on, take the air filter ass. off and you can see the choke flap.
give it a push with your finger, see if its free. if not tap it with a screwdriver
it may need a bit of grease, or adjusting

could be linkage gone, or choke mechanism bi-metal strip
try undoing the screws and adjusting it off
to be sure its the choke causing the problem (and not some other carb problem) wedge the choke flap open and try starting it

If it's an electric choke then unplug it.l hate electric chokes. I had one of my first 3rd gen and had no end of problems with it revving it's nuts off and over fueling and flooding the engine. I've got a manual one on my 3rd gen now, but have never plugged it in so effectively it hasn't got a choke. Takes a couple of goes to start in the morning but once is going it's fine.

Thanks for the advice guys, must have been the choke sticking, i tinkered with it a bit, and then it was fine. only thing is now when you put your foot down it splutters and there is no power. F.....ng thing! One step at a time i suppose! :)
