I have recently bought a 1980 firebird and apart from having a blast driving it I'm now rectifying issues, today's problem is the reversing lights, they work but only in neutral, is there a switch ? If so where is it before me and my tool kit have the whole car apart.

There is a switch located at the bottom of the steering column. However, it is operated by a mechanical linkage between the shifter assembly on the gearbox and a tab connected to the bottom of the steering column under the bonnet. It is likely to be this linkage which has become out of adjustment. If you open the bonnet you will see the linkage coming from between the drivers exhaust manifold and the steering column. This will need to be adjusted/reshape until it operates the switch in reverse. It's possible the linkage assembly is worn and so will need to be refreshed.

Here are some photos of the linkage assembly and also the tab it connects to on the base of the column.
