sorting 2nd gen radio wiring

Hi

I have managed to locate the live feed for the radio today, but there are also 2 other wiring harness's which come to the radio area which dont appear to be long enough to go anywhere else. There is a plug on both harness's. One has a yellow blue and red going to it, and the other has 2 reds and a blue. any ideas what these are?

its been a while since i opened this topic and im now only just sorting out the wiring!

Ive managed to locate both the front and rear speaker cables and plugs which are still intact.

The only plug i could not locate was the power plug itself. The wiring is a wasps nest behind the dash. I think somebody chopped off the plug before i owned the car. I have managed to find 4 single wires which i think are the radio power ones.

According to haynes wiring diagrams there should be:

Yellow - 12 volt when ignition on
Pink with white - Permanent 12 volt for the radio memory
Black - Negative/ground
Grey - instrument panel lighting 12 volt

I was able to find the yellow which i confirmed was correct by checking that voltage is present with the ignition on, but not when the key is turned to off or not in. I was also able to find the grey from the instrument panel lighting and also the black ground wire. However i could not locate a pink and white wire anywhere near the radio area. However there was an orange wire which was the same length as the others and exited the harness in the same place as the others. This was indeed a permanent 12 volts. Is there any reason to suggest that this is the wrong wire? other than the fact that Haynes states it should be pink and white? im thinking that the colours may have altered slightly for the 1980 models? as there were alot of minor changes to the wiring in that year.

What do you guys think?

Hmm on second thoughts,

According to an official wiring diagram i just found there was never a permanent live to the radio on a pink and white cable. There only ever were the black, yellow and grey. There was an optional pink wire for a power antenna. So it appears i already have what i need regardless of where that permanent 12 volt orange wire is coming from!

12 volts is 12 volts, it probably is the right wire, haynes is not 100% correct often (mainly due to covering 10 years of production in one manual)
GM and all manufacturers manuals are 1 year only as changes do occur
as the radio is low current draw even if it is not the correct wire using it will be fine

Yes i guess so - there have been a number of inaccuracies i have seen in the haynes manual i have. Its annoying that they used pictures of Camaros in it! i know they are both F bodies, but the bits they have used the photos for are totally different!

I guess then by this time tomorrow my head unit will be fitted! just need to get some 6x9's for the rear shelf and sort out the front speakers too!

I know this is an old post but how did you remove the factory radio cassette unit? Want to take mine out as it's playing tapes slow. Removed the facia plate the other day but no way of pulling through the gap as it's cut out for the buttons etc.

i didnt....mine came without a radio in it.

However,

i did do it on the old orange T/A i had for a couple of months. If i recall, you have to remove the 2 large dial knobs on the left and right and remove the 2 nuts behind each knob. Then get down in the footwell (passenger side) and look behind the radio area and you will see 2 screws holding the radio in at the sides (one either side holding the radio in place) Unscrew these and then disconnect the plugs. The radio slides out backwards after that....towards the firewall.

Got the knobs and nuts of Saturday but then was a bit stumped as to how it came out. Job for the weekend now plus fitting a cb!
