1980 front dash speakers

Post by bhm1712 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 1:03 pm

Does anybody know what size the original speakers were in the dash on a second gen 1980? I seem to recall the idiot who ripped out all my dash wiring and associated stuff said they were about 6 inch round ones?

Thanks Terry! Upon a bit of searching online it appears they might actually be 3.5inch/8cm speakers so if you could verify that would be awesome!

Hi
I've had a look there is only one in the centre of the dashboard size 9" x 4". If you leave me your email I will send you the photo of mine.
Cheers
Terry

Thanks for that, i can just about figure out where that is!

I may just go ahead and try and fit some 10cm speakers in the original locations providing i can get them through the hole without taking the dash out!

Well i fitted 8cm speakers in the front dash locations. I bought mac audio street 87.2 speakers which had the shallowest basket and magnets I could find. They don't fit straight onto the original mounts but I found some slotted steel pieces which enabled me to get them to fit just fine. It was a right job getting access for the nuts and bolts though! I had to reach up from the foot well on the drivers side and had to re engineer my elbow and wrist joints to do the other side! It would have been easier to use those self tapping screws and fixings as per the original but they just don't get tight enough for my liking to prevent vibrations. The sound quality is not bad for such small speakers but I wasn't expecting miracles from them. They will just help to balance the sound a bit and accompany the 6x9s in the back!

The seats look great on top! They used to be red! Sprayed them with flexible vinyl paint. It doesn't scrape off it kind of dyes them I guess. Shame the springs are shot below!! Makes for a comfy experience funnily enough!

Not sure about the tevion head unit now I've tried it though. I got it 5 years ago for the bird but never got round to fitting it what with the experience I had with my car. Might try a spare pioneer one and see if its any better. I think the 6x9's will change my perception of sound quality or so I'm hoping.

Got the 6x9s in tonight. They didn't fit but the dremel soon sorted it out. What a difference they make!!! They sound amazing. I got "Juice Orange" ones which were cheap but had excellent reviews. Not sure of the RMS wattage but they are max 450 watt. I'm truly surprised by the bass these things can create and the fact that they are 4 way with 2 tweeters and an extra speaker on top seems to give the ability to reproduce highs I've not heard on any of my cars audio systems before!!!!

Chuffed to say the least
