Autopontiac have a lot of experience with this, but my ten penneth is this:

If your running a standard carb on a standard motor then an electric fuel pump will not have any effect on the performance of the engine. Unlike EFI, Carbs don't require high pressure. As far as i know, the maximum pressure delivery to the carb needs to be around 8psi,but its GPH gallons per hour which is very important. If your not having any fuel delivery issues, then i would leave it as is. To fit an electric pump you would also need to fit a fuel pressure regulator. Its money spending which isn't worth it on a standard motor.

Cheers for the reply Ian. Mine has a holley 4 barrel on, and I don't plan on keeping it standard for long! I was advised to get rid of the mechanical one to reduce mechanical drag on the engine.

the drag from the pump is pretty minimal copared to a complete cast iron crank and rods if your going for some performance mods then a facet might be needed but often the std one is fine, for some reason electric aftermarket ones are often not very reliable in my exsperiance yet one fitted from the factory do not often go wrong i have only had to replace a handful of pumps on customers cars

If you were to go down the electric route with building the new harness it might be worth including the wiring for one incase you ever do go the whole hog and have a built motor. Then it's there ready for an electric pump!
