HELP! Private Plate retention on a write off....????

Post by Black T Top » Tue Jan 15, 2013 11:55 am

Hi guys, ok so my car is a total write off, and the insurance company have told me that I can retain the salvage rights of the car and I will get it back to strip, they will just deduct the scrap value from the insurance payout. It also has a private plate on it.......so........whats the best way to get the plate off the car?

DVLA guy said that so long as the car remains in my ownership, I can transfer the plate after the insurance has settled so long as it still has valid TAX and MOT on it. I will need to supply the TAX disc, MOT certificate, V5 document, V317 form, engineers report and letter from insurer saying that have no interest in the plate....oh and £105 to pput it on retention.

But when I called back to double check, another DVLA girl told me that the plate had to be tranferred BEFORE the insurance classed the car as a write off or it's lost forever.....so.....anyone know for sure which is correct, as the plate is worth more than they will prob pay out for the car!

I think the first guy seemed to know the most about it so assume he is right, but if anyone can confirm this that would be great. Also, any idea how they will calculate the scrap value that they will deduct to let me get it back?

Alastair.

As far as I know, if you own the car and it is your name with a in date MOT you can transfer the plate or put in on retention. it doesn't need to have insurance or tax as it can be sorn and may be covered by other insurance or in your case a write off with a MOT and TAX involved in an insurance claim. I have a close mate who's wife works for the DVLA in Swansea, I will ask for you on the QT. I had a car all be it 25 years + ago and got a bent MOT just to get the plate off it, Rover 3500s (reg 00027)

Thanks guys, might end up just scrapping the plate with the sheel and writing the plate off....going to cost £105 or so to put it on retention and I don't really wnat it, so might not be worth the hasselhoff.

Got enough hasselhoff arranging to get the new car shipped up to me and the current one stripped and away to make room for it. DOn't have time to mess about waiting weeks on the DVLA issuing a new logbok before I can scrap the car.

Yeah and I'd rather have the MOT benefits of the Q plate lol!

Will stick it onto a retention certificate and Ebay it then, cos I don't want it!
