Hi

I own a 1966 pontiac bonneville and need some help ...the hex nut keeping the power steering pulley on its shaft on the pump is a 'slotted hex nut' of some sort - i believe they are self tightening so they won't fall of the rotating shaft?

Anyway - question is this - what's the correct way to unscrew and then torque back on a moving/revolving shaft? I'm worried about damaging the shaft/power steering pump if i hold/clamp/or do something daft...

Thanks

Kev

When I did mine, plus I've seen other people and garages do it, I used an impact drive and held the pulley/ locked it in place with a tightly held screw driver. The impact drive gives the initial jolt to loosen the nut before the pulley has chance to move! Then it can be loosened by hand and hold the pulley by hand
