Welding for MOT

Post by warlord » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:01 pm

Mums Grand Am just failed on welding needed to the lower part of the rear inner arches. it's booked in to be fixed thursday. she's looking for opinions as i'm not experenced enough to know. it needed welding last year. she doesn't want to have to keep spending on welding every year. the rest of the arches are ok as is the sills and unde side of the chassis. just wondering what you thought? i've added some pics of where the welding needs doing.
thanks

forgot to mention, she doesn't want to sell as she loves her Pontiac.
Would a good rust killer/preventer on the chassis and waxoyl help stop any future welding being needed.
thanks :thumb:

hard to tell from the photos and where it is.

But yes, a good wire brushing, ideally back to metal iff poss even using eg a drill and fibre discs, then paint with POR15 or equiv, then overcoat in waxoil / dinitrol or equiv.

Also try to get into any gaps crevises or box sections from the inside and spray with dinitrol cavity wax or equiv.

Also, make sure you do the same for areas of newly welded sections as I always find no proper protection is added to new metal and it'll start rusing again straight away if you're not careful. Depends who you get to do the work but ive seen some shockers, from one place i used on an old car of mine at a garage in Surbiton/tolworth did a horifically bad job I spent more time sorting it out afterwards then it would have for me to just do it myself in the first place.

If the rusty areas are not in a structural place or not within 30 cms of susppension mount points etc then it may not be an MOT failure but worth nipping in the bud anyway. Rust is everyones worst enemy!

Just my two-penneth. I spend time and money on my cars to try and protect them as best I can against rust. prevention is better than cure!

That's great, I've got both por 15 and waxoyl. Also got a aerosol from dinotrol, can't remember which one, but I remember the label saying its a "hard brown metallic waxy film". Thanks :)
