Q Plate MOT Advantages?

Post by Black T Top » Tue Feb 12, 2013 3:11 pm

OK, so I've just bought a factory black, 1982 Trans-Am T-Top......thing is it's on a Q Plate.

Only been on the road for 6yrs since it was imported in 1989, and spent the rest of its life in a garage, so needs recomissioning and is on a Q plate. I thought this was a bad thing, but after a bit of Googling it seems perhaps it's a good thing, as there appears to be loads of things that don't get cheked at MOT time. So, can anyone in the know on here, provide a list of what is exempt from MOT testing on a Q plate.

So far Ive been told that:

Emissions arent tested (only visually to see if smoke comes out the exhaust),
Rear Seatbelts are not tested,
Side indicators are not tested.....????

Cheers,
Alastair.

Vehicles having a Q plate registration when presented for MOT are to
be treated as being first used on 1 January 1971, or before

so no fog light required, visual inspection for smoke on emision test

you could get away with one centre brake light only

you dont need side repeaters or hazard warning

rear seatbelts are not required, but if fitted are tested the same as any (later) vehicle

Awseome.....nice one John!

Amazingly all the hazzard light ect are working and not even got a puff of smoke on startup out this new car, so I reckon it'll be MOTable once the rear shocks and backbox are swapped over for the ones out the GTA.....oh and the handbrake it stuck in the off position.
