Hi
The car I am referring to is a 1991 Firebird 3.1 V6 auto
I purchased the car at the weekend and had a 3 hour drive to get it home and I did not notice a smell. I also drove it to work the next day (10 mins) and again no smell. But on my way home from work I noticed a strong burning smell coming from the rear of the car. The smell went away pretty quick so I had a hard time working out where it came from. The next day when I got to work I was straight under the car trying to work out the smell and I can only say its coming from the rear. Almost like paint on an exhaust. But I would have noticed this after the drive home when buying the car right?
Under the bonnet its clean as a whistle and under the car its again pretty clean.
Ive run the engine up without moving the car to see if it was brake / wheel related and I do still get the smell when stationary. More so when I throw in a few revs.
I cant see anything touching the exhaust at all.
Anyone have any ideas I could try before I pay a garage to put it up on there ramp?
Kind regards
Mark

Re: Burning Smell from rear of the car
I often get a burning rubber smell from the back of my car
have you checked the exhaust is not fouling or touching anything?
could be exhaust restricted or excess fuel in exhaust burning, or lean mixture

Re: Burning Smell from rear of the car
Could it be a slight engine oil or transmission leak which is being blown onto th exhaust and burning off?? I had this on my car when I first got it . Stunk to high heaven and it was at the back because airflow was blowing the fluid to the back.

Re: Burning Smell from rear of the car
Thanks for your replies. I'm going to give the guys in redhill a call tomo. Get booked in for someone to give the car a good look over so I know what needs doing. Hopefully they will work the smell out too
