Electric speedo conversion?
Since I've owned it my 2nd Gen's manual gearbox has always had a problem with the speedo drive gear not working even after replacing cable and gear and checking the guage. It's a problem inside the box I think. So long story short, I'm after low cost alternative to rebuilding the gearbox - perhaps an electrical replacement with a sensor put on the wheel or propshaft or soemthing? But ideally I'd like to keep the stock mechanical guage or something that looks like it. One other things I'd really like it to have is an Odometer clock that will work indefinitely (ie. won't reset if I take the battery off if digital type). Anyone got any recommendations of methods or brands? (I did consider the speedhut GPS one but would need to import it which would knock the cost up).

The only thing I can think of which will retain the original look is to buy an analogue dial gps speedo and then take apart the original speedo and the gps speedo and build the mechanism from the new one into the old one. Then you could rescale the dial display in the original unit to suit the new. The digital display part for odometer would retain its odometer reading with the battery disconnected.

i think you could modify it such that the parking brake lamp still has its original place. if you get a gauge of a similar size to the original the scales might not be so different.
