Cracked Windscreen!!!

Post by Richard J » Sat Jun 07, 2014 5:40 pm

Came out today took the cover off and my screen has cracked all the way to the middle (it did have a little one in the corner initially)

So my questions are

1 Best place to get a new one of a 74 2nd Gen
2 Easy to fit?
3 Is it best to try and get it through my insurance company?

Any thoughts on this much appreciate

Cheers

R

I would imagine your windscreen excess is less than what it will cost to by one from somewhere else , plus the removal and fitting is included when it is not if you buy one off your own back. I've always gone through insurance as it's always been cheaper. I'm a bad luck Mofo and have had 8 new screens since starting to drive just under 11 years ago.

I once had 2 in less than a week! Stone flicked up from a lorry on the A38 near mansfield and cracked my first cars screen from top to bottom in the middle, had it replaced on a Friday 2 days after it happened and then that Friday evening on the way to my girlfriend of the time a bad boy racer in a nova overtook me doing about 80 in a 30 zone past my old school and flicked another stone and cracked from the right hand side of the screen at eye level to the middle of the screen!

Crikey,i thought i was unlucky with screens but your definately worse

I am gonna have to buy one of those cheap ones off ebay,it's just being bothered to drive over to Grimsby to pick it up.I am covered on my insurance but no mot or tax so can't take it anywhere to get it done.
Just out of interest, when claiming for a screen has anyone's insurance been higher following year,i know it don't affect no claims but knowing what insurances are like i wouldn't put it past them to put price up when insurance renewal is due.

Mine has never increased as a result of it. In my years of driving and 8 screens later my insurance was cheaper year on year until I got to 25 when it roughly stayed the same +/- £10. Then Last year with the EU changes to insurance laws regarding discrimination between men and women drivers it came down by around £75 per year

An update

I am with Adrian Flux and phoned them, as I am comprehensive I am covered and my excess is £80, I asked a good few times if this would effect my insurance and they said no it's a separate thing.

They put me through to a Glass company who apparently will phone me Monday to book an appointment

She asked me for any details about the screen, so explained it needs to be tinted with the antenna in the glass and the moulding can't just be ripped off, care needed to be taken, she took it all in her stride and said that's fine

It all seems a bit too easy, but I'll keep you posted

I also spoke to DB motors, and was on the phone to Martin for ages, what a nice fella, but they still wanted £210+VAT and to get it to Essex from Leicester by courier (the cheapest way) would have been around another £100, hence phoning Insurance company

My only worry is the glass people are used to working on a ford focus and don't have any knowledge of old cars, but I am sure they must have come across it before...

It's no different dude..... The windows are bonded in the same way now as they were then. Autoglass did mine and they were very professional and had a tool to remove the trim around the window. Took him longer to remove and refit the trim than it did to remove the old and fit the new screen.

If it eases your mind then you can remove the trim yourself in readiness. With mine he cut the old seal all the way around and disconnected the aerial cable from between the window wipers before lifting the screen out with 2 suckers. The bottom edge where it had delaminated did disintegrate but he vacuumed it all up before fitting the new.

Only tried going through insurers once and they wanted me to take the car to Warrington, only half hour away but same problem then, car off road, that's when i always seem to break them ::)
I suppose it's worth phoning them to ask, nothing to lose and insurance only runs out in august so plenty of time, except for the fact i want it on the road now, still too much to do though.

I have had 3 or 4 in my life time, aways got a new one via the insurance company, thats what they are there for, { only costs the excess} £50-80 quid. If they dont have your screen they will order it. longest i have waited is 2 weeks, that was for a 78 TA. It wont put you insurance up either if you claim for a screen

Ian, you're not Walter White are you?

In Breaking Bad, he kept having his screen broken on his little Aztec!

He'd get it replaced, and it would get broken AGAIN. Made me laugh.

Phoned my insurance today,Frank Pickles,Autoglass in Warrington have one in stock, they are coming out saturday to fit it.Not really saving much though,£125 excess to pay,so save £60 on getting it myself, bit of a rip off really.
Found a bit of rot on pillar so took screen out today, need to find time to sort it before saturday, already saved them half a job,the hardest half too, lol.

I thought it was because your all rich down there, lol.Seems to make a difference that extra 4 pence a litre,£52 to fill up down there, went straight to petrol station when i got back and it took £60 to fill it,both times from around the half tank mark.Probably takes more coming back as it's all up hill.
