hey guys, i took the cb out of the saab and put it back in the T/A today, but as i cant hear it for engine noise, i wired it up to an amp. only a small 2 channel, and 1 fusion speaker. it receives fine but every time i press the button to transmit, i get real loud feedback squeal. i cant turn the mic down as theres no buttons to do it, and i even put the speaker in the boot......i just cant stop the squealing.

any ideas what the problem could be?

The only way you can prevent accoustic feedback is by either adjusting the volume so that the speaker output is not picked up by the microphone, or investing in a feedback suppressor.

Thing is the output should normally be muted anyway when you press the mic button to prevent this from happening. How did you wire up the amp? Did the CB have a purpose fitted socket for it or did you butcher the inside to solder your own wires on?

amp is wired up in the normal way, along side one for the sub, and i have wired the speaker on single channel on the amp and i tryed it bridged over the 2 channels.
when you talk into the mic, you can hear yourself in the speaker.
the feed back is instantaneous, as soon as you press the button. i thought it might be a bad earth but checked and its fine.

Could you hear yourself through the original CB speaker when talking before you connected the amp and sub to it? If so then it would have been designed this way. They wouldn't have worried about feedback issues as the original speaker wouldn't have been loud enough to cause it and they wouldn't have considered that someone might connect up a whopping great amp and subwoofer!

I'm assuming if you turn the volume way down on your amp then all is fine?

cant hear meself thru original speaker. all controls onn tte amp are right down low and it still happens.

i pulled the jack plug halfway out today and taped it down, and seems to be working ok, not squealing at all. think the output on the rig is kaput. might be a dry joint or summut. looking at new ones on ebay anyway, as even as its not the prob, i need another one to go back in the saab as it was holding my stereo up. using old dvd cases at the mo!

got a CB I want to sell, only used it for a few weeks (before deciding to lighten the car)

it has a loose wire in the mike plug, sometimes you need to wiggle it
needs soldering, but never got round to it

well, quick update, after playing with the jack plug and getting it working, we headed up to the ace. just getting into the swing of things, so turned the stereo up abit loud.....ooops, both amps cut out and havnt worked since, so spent the next 3 hrs with the cb up against my ear!!!! will get the amps going next week. sure it must be summut simple.....all the fuses are ok tho

Sorry for digging up another old post, but I thought CB's were illegal in the UK? Or is it just the ones from the US because they use a different frequency maybe? I've got one that I want to put into my car but was afraid to once I found out about moving there.

I don't think they're illegal... yet... but probably will be soon knowing our government. Either that or we'll have to pay a million pounds of tax just to an CB aerial on the car. But I've got one and I've never been questioned over it. I don't know if youre still allowed to use them whilst driving without a handsfree kit tho. There was a loophole a few years ago where you could do that, but theyve probably closed that by now. So just dont be holding the mic whilst driving next to a smokey

you can still use them legally even using the mike (just like taxi's and the police)

you cant use US CB's in this country, wrong frequency (yours work a lot better, ours only have a range of a couple of miles) >:(

when I first started driving we used to get them from the states and use them (totally illegal, but having watched "dukes of Hazzard" Smokey and the bandit and convoy etc we had to have one)

LOL I may hook mine up then. I've got a Cobra 29 Classic. It only reaches 5-10 miles based on weather or where I am, the higher up the better.
